402AI.NET

Fastest Path for Humans

If you are a human user and want something working quickly, start with the topup flow. It is the shortest path to a reusable token and a normal OpenAI-compatible setup.

  1. Open /topup and create an invoice.
  2. Pay it and claim your abl_... token.
  3. Use that token with https://402ai.net/api/v1 in Curl, Python, Node, Cursor, Aider, or OpenWebUI.

Choose Your Path

Path 1: L402 Pay-Per-Request

Best for one-shot calls and agents that can pay invoices automatically. This is not the easiest first path for most human users.

  • Call a paid endpoint with no token auth.
  • Receive HTTP 402 with invoice and macaroon.
  • Pay the invoice and retry with Authorization: L402 <macaroon>:<preimage>.
  • Variable-cost endpoints use a conservative estimate based on current input plus requested or default output-token caps.

Path 2: Prepaid Token

Best for SDK usage, repeated calls, and any flow that needs a persistent account identity. This is the recommended first path for most users.

  • Create a topup invoice.
  • Pay it and claim an abl_... token.
  • Use that token as Authorization: Bearer or X-Token.
  • If a token is present, the API tries token balance first. If the balance is too low, the current response is insufficient_balance.
Human users: start at /topup. Agents: inspect /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt, and /openapi.json first.

Payment Semantics

  • All paid endpoints can return an L402 challenge if you call them without a prepaid token.
  • Deterministic endpoints settle exactly at the challenged amount.
  • Variable-cost endpoints challenge a conservative estimate computed from the current input plus requested max_tokens, max_completion_tokens, or max_output_tokens. If none is sent, the model default cap is used.
  • L402 retries are one-shot settlements against that estimate. There is no post-response refund or extra charge on the L402 path.
  • If you send a prepaid token, token balance is attempted first. Token-backed variable-cost calls reconcile against actual usage after the response returns.
  • If a token is underfunded, refill the same token through POST /api/v1/topup and retry.

Flow Diagram

1

REQUEST

POST /api/v1/<endpoint>
Use a bearer token for any endpoint. Paid endpoints can also start with an L402 challenge when called without a token.

2

ROUTE

402ai routes by model to the configured provider.
Cheapest eligible route is selected automatically.

3

SETTLE

Estimates are debited before execution.
Usage-based requests reconcile deltas after settlement.

All paid endpoints can start with L402 or token balance.Variable-cost L402 calls settle against a conservative estimate based on current input plus the requested or default output cap, with no post-response refund. If a funded token is present it is used first; token-backed variable-cost calls reconcile against actual usage after the response returns. Retry paid calls with Authorization: L402 <macaroon>:<preimage>. If a token is present but underfunded, the current API returns insufficient_balance; refill the same token and retry.

Quick Start With a Token

Use one base URL for chat, responses, embeddings, images, audio, and video once you have a funded token.

bash
API="https://402ai.net"
TOKEN="abl_your_token_here"

# List models from the unified endpoint
curl -sS "$API/api/v1/models" | jq '.data[:5]'

# Call chat completions via a single OpenAI-compatible base URL
curl -sS -X POST "$API/api/v1/chat/completions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -d '{
    "model":"gpt-4o-mini",
    "messages":[{"role":"user","content":"hello bitcoin world"}]
  }' | jq .

Unified Endpoint Surface

Base URL: https://402ai.net/api/v1

Primary routes: POST /chat/completions, POST /responses, POST /embeddings, POST /images/generations, POST /audio/speech, POST /audio/transcriptions, POST /video/generations, GET /models.

All paid endpoints can start with either a funded token or an L402 challenge. Variable-cost L402 calls settle against a conservative estimate, while token-backed variable-cost calls reconcile against actual usage after the response returns.

Topup Quick Start (Prepaid)

Prefer lower-latency prepaid usage? Create a topup invoice, claim a bearer token, then spend from balance.

bash
API="https://402ai.net"

# Step 1: Create topup invoice (new token)
TOPUP=$(curl -sS -X POST "$API/api/v1/topup" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"amount_usd":1.20}')
echo "$TOPUP" | jq .
INVOICE=$(echo "$TOPUP" | jq -r '.invoice')

# Step 2: Pay invoice with your wallet and get preimage (example: phoenixd)
PREIMAGE=$(curl -sS -X POST http://localhost:9741/payinvoice \
  -u ":$PHOENIX_WALLET_PASSWORD" \
  --data-urlencode "invoice=$INVOICE" | jq -r '.paymentPreimage')

# Step 3: Claim token
CLAIM=$(curl -sS -X POST "$API/api/v1/topup/claim" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d "{\"preimage\":\"$PREIMAGE\"}")
echo "$CLAIM" | jq .
TOKEN=$(echo "$CLAIM" | jq -r '.token')

# Step 4: Spend balance with bearer token
curl -sS -X POST "$API/api/v1/chat/completions" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" \
  -d '{"model":"gpt-4o-mini","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"say hello in 5 words"}]}' | jq .

# Refill existing token:
# 1) POST /api/v1/topup with Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN
# 2) pay refill invoice
# 3) POST /api/v1/topup/claim with {"preimage":"...", "token":"'$TOKEN'"}

SDK Compatibility

Prepaid tokens work as drop-in API keys with the OpenAI SDK. One token, one endpoint. Works with any OpenAI-compatible client (OpenClaw, LangChain, LiteLLM, etc).

Surfacebase_urlModel Routing
Unified OpenAI-compatiblehttps://402ai.net/api/v1Pick any supported model id (OpenAI / Anthropic / OpenRouter / xAI etc)
python
from openai import OpenAI

# Use your prepaid topup token as api_key
TOKEN = "abl_your_token_here"

# ── OpenAI models ──
client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://402ai.net/api/v1",
    api_key=TOKEN,
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-4o-mini",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)
print(resp.choices[0].message.content)

# ── Anthropic models (via OpenAI SDK) ──
client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://402ai.net/api/v1",
    api_key=TOKEN,
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-4-20250514",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)

# ── OpenRouter models (via OpenAI SDK) ──
client = OpenAI(
    base_url="https://402ai.net/api/v1",
    api_key=TOKEN,
)
resp = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="google/gemini-2.0-flash-lite-001",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}],
)

# Streaming works too
stream = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-4o-mini",
    messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Count to 5"}],
    stream=True,
)
for chunk in stream:
    if chunk.choices[0].delta.content:
        print(chunk.choices[0].delta.content, end="")

Wallet Integrations

Implement pay_invoice() per wallet and plug it into the flow.

python
import requests

def pay_invoice(bolt11):
    resp = requests.post(
        "http://localhost:9740/payinvoice",
        data={"invoice": bolt11},
        auth=("", "your-phoenixd-password")
    )
    # Phoenix returns preimage directly
    return resp.json()["paymentPreimage"]
Browser apps: use WebLN. If users have Alby or another WebLN extension, window.webln.sendPayment(invoice) returns preimage directly.

Task Marketplace

Post tasks with a sat budget, receive quotes from workers, lock funds in escrow, and release payment on delivery confirmation. All identity is via X-Token (from the topup flow). Paid endpoints accept either account balance or L402 per-request payment.

Task Marketplace — Authentication

X-Token — your topup bearer token, sent as X-Token: <token> header. This identifies your account for task ownership, messaging, and escrow.

L402 — for paid endpoints (create task, submit quote), you can pay per-request via L402 instead of using account balance. The server returns a 402 with a Lightning invoice if payment is needed.

Task Marketplace — Escrow Flow

1

POST TASK

Buyer creates a task with title, description, and budget_sats. Posting costs $0.05, converted to sats at runtime.

2

QUOTE

Worker submits a quote with price_sats. Quoting costs $0.01, converted to sats at runtime. Buyer accepts and escrow locks the quote price from buyer balance.

3

DELIVER

Worker uploads delivery. Buyer confirms — escrow released to worker. Worker collects via Lightning invoice.
